ABOUT

Born in Paris in 1991, David Pelissou discovered drawing and painting as his main ways of expression from a very young age. He naturally moved on towards an artistic course in high school, and later earned a Master's degree in Interior Architecture and Object Design from LISAA Paris. He continued his university carreer by obtaining a state diploma in Architecture from the reknown École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris Belleville (ENSAPB). He then, began his professional career in various architecture firms as project manager.

Alongside his work as an architect, David has remained deeply attached to his first passion: painting. Over the years, he has explored different styles and techniques to expand his creativity. Looking back, his work has highlighted consistently a steady dialogue between the depiction of nature and human intervention, a relationship which is at the core of  his art. Influenced by Romantic artists such as C.Friedrich and J.M.W.Turner, as well as contemporary figures like G.Richter, C.J.Godly, P.Soulages, and J.Genovés, he enriches his oil painting technique and combines it with architectural model-making, thus merging his two worlds.

The wild, inhospitable landscapes encountered during his travels have become his favourite subject. He represents these landscapes in an organic and spontaneous way, through thick layers of oil paint directly shaped and sculpted onto his canvas. Within these raw and powerful depictions of nature, he introduces tiny architectural elements using 3D models, symbols of a controlled and linear human intervention. These scenes prompt a reflection on the human irrelevance compared to an overwhelming nature. He invites the spectator to share various feelings such as awe, solitude, exclusivity, and vulnerability when confronted with these unforgiving environments.

This contrast between the ruthless immensity of the nature and the measured, yet steady presence of the human footprint on this same nature is the essence  of David Pelissou’s artistic approach, powerfully expressed  in each one of his works.
